I was sharing at a Bible study and mentioned that several places in the margin of my Bible I have written “DUH”. Afterward, I was encouraged to change that to “Aha!” Upon further reflection, DUH seems much more appropriate. There are things in the Bible that should be self-evident and/or obvious to all, that I have overlooked for years. When it finally dawns on me and I wonder “how did I miss that for so long”… DUH goes in the margin.
I can think of other places where “Aha!” would work better though. Finding a cross reference that brings explanation and/or clarity to a passage might need the marginal Aha! Finding meaning and life application in scripture is a wonderful treasure hunt.
It amazes me that scripture says of itself, that all of it is “profitable”. When I can’t seem to find any profitability in a passage, it causes me to pause and know “The Game is Afoot” as Sherlock Holmes would say. And I’m off to find what about that verse makes it profitable for “doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness.” 2 Tim 3:16 Or, easier to remember, what is right, what is not right, how to get right and how to stay right – all scripture is inspired by God.
Still wondering about the “begats” being profitable. Mr. Holmes would say, “Elementary my dear Friend”.
